Scientists from Portugal and Sweden found that the development of vision problems after infection with the Coronavirus is linked to a defect in certain types of T cells, which contribute to the formation of chronic inflammation within the eye. This was reported by the press service of Linköping University.
Professor Neil Lagali said: “Importantly, we have been able to show that this vision problem is real and that these disorders can be identified using objective tests. Now we know what is wrong with the eyes of these patients, and we have also discovered possible mechanisms for the development of these failures.”
Scientists studied the health of 100 Swedish residents with complaints of visual impairment after Covid-19 and identified disturbances in the production of 178 proteins in tear fluid. Many of them are related to regulating the work of nerve endings and T cells. According to researchers, a defect in immune cells leads to inflammation of the eye nerves, which causes disturbances in visual acuity. These symptoms last for more than three years in some patients. Scientists hope that understanding the mechanisms will help find treatments to restore vision TASS.
The latest strain of the coronavirus “layer” that has blanketed Russia raises many questions. Some claim that it can cause allergic reactions in humans. Others say tests can’t detect it. Vechernyaya Moskva investigated whether these statements were actually true.
