The BBC announced on April 15 that it would cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs – nearly one in 10 – to cope with “significant financial pressures”.
Talvan Davies, acting director general of the BBC, told staff that the BBC needed to save £500 million over the next two years. He did not rule out that the cuts would lead to the closure of entire channels or services.
“The gap between our expenses and our income is widening,” Davis told employees. According to him, this is due to inflation and decline in income from license fees and commercial activities, as well as instability in the global economy.
The BBC’s work in the UK is funded directly to a large extent by UK residents who pay for their television licence. Partly BBC World Service Funded Through government grants. In addition, the BBC carries out commercial activities.
Currently, the BBC employs about 21.5 thousand permanent employees.
