Maxim (Moscow). I am a Russian citizen. I was born in Moscow 45 years ago, and will probably continue to live here for the rest of my life, despite my sincere desire not to. I’m a normal person. I do not belong to show business or to any national, cultural or sexual minority. I have no education or special professional skills that would help me get a job in Europe or the USA, but at the same time I suffer from many chronic diseases, some of which in Russia are included in the list of so-called rare diseases (orphans) for which my country continues to receive assistance from abroad in the form of expensive medicines, despite all the sanctions.
To everyone who wrote letters to this section, who read them, who posted them, who was afraid to do this and that, who was afraid, who is afraid now, who feels completely hopeless, wherever you are today and tomorrow, whether you are Ukrainian or Russian, I say – you are. Can you hear him? Do you understand this? You! Nothing can cancel you!
War is completely immoral and has no political, cultural, historical or any justification at all, even if everyone around you thinks differently. I don’t know how it happened that my peers, with whom I grew up in the same country and in the same culture, suddenly chose “We could do that again” instead of “If there had been no war.” I can guess something, but after a while, their logic is simply not interesting to me.
I am a smart, kind, funny, curious, interesting person. I will always love this in myself and in others, no matter what happens to us. After the first six months of the war, which I spent in panic attacks and desperately drunk, I realized that I would never consent if weak people were insulted, a woman was raped, a child was humiliated, or an animal was tortured. This is the simple interior solution! I will never distinguish between black and white, which means I will never live in the fear and hatred they spread among us.
I want to say – if you feel bad now, you are okay. This is what it means to be an ordinary person in abnormal circumstances. If you are alone, we will meet one day, and we will recognize each other in the crowd by our gaze, by our silence, by our facial expressions, and by our reluctance to hurt others. This is a dark time when you have the opportunity to be a light in this world.
