US President Donald Trump announced on April 16 that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a ceasefire. The US President said that the corresponding 10-day system will take effect on the night of April 17.
Trump said: “I just had productive conversations with the Honorable Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. The two leaders agreed that in order to achieve peace between their countries, they will formally declare a 10-day truce.”
Direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese diplomats took place in the United States on April 14, the first since 1993.
Israel and Lebanon have technically been at war since Israel’s founding in 1948.
On the night of April 8, the United States and Iran announced that they had agreed to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Israel continued to strike Lebanon, where the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group is based. The US authorities said that the ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon.
Israel stressed that it is not fighting with Lebanon, but rather with the Hezbollah group on Lebanese territory.
Lebanon does not officially recognize the State of Israel.
