Donald Trump said he is not worried about Viktor Orban’s defeat in the Hungarian elections and likes Peter Magyar, who won.
“I think the new guy will do well, he’s a good guy,” Trump told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl.
On the eve of the parliamentary elections in Hungary, US Vice President J.D. Vance came to Budapest to support Orban (and summoned Trump from the stage during his speech). Trump told ABC News he didn’t know if his personal involvement in the campaign would have made a difference, but Orban was “way behind.” The US President added: “I was not really involved in this campaign. But Victor is a good person.”
He also noted that future Prime Minister Peter Magyar was previously a member of Orbán’s party and had similar views on immigration.
Elections were held in Hungary on 12 April. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in power for 16 years, conceded defeat for his Fidesz party that same evening and congratulated rival Peter Magyar on his victory – and will now become prime minister. His TISA party also won a constitutional majority in Parliament. Magyar has already said that he is ready for “practical cooperation” with Russia and that Hungary will not block a €90 billion loan to Ukraine, which the EU wants to allocate.
