Donald Trump, in response to reporters’ questions before leaving Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, said that there would be no escalation in Cuba.
The journalist asked Trump whether escalation should be expected. The American President explained: “With Cuba?” – After hearing the confirmation, he said: “No. There will be no escalation. I do not think that is necessary.”
Commenting on the accusations against Raul Castro, Trump said that this was a “very important point.” The US President added: “We think about Cuba, this is very important. This was a very important moment for people – not only for Cuban Americans, but also for those who came from Cuba and want to return there.”
US relations with Cuba have deteriorated since Trump returned to the White House. The US president regularly criticizes the Cuban government and has allowed “friendly control” of the island. Since the beginning of 2026, Washington has increased its pressure and effectively imposed a blockade on fuel supplies to Cuba. This led to a severe energy crisis and power outages across the island.
On May 20, the United States charged former Cuban President Raul Castro with conspiring to kill four people, including three Americans. The incident in question is a 1996 incident in which four members of Brothers to the Rescue flew on a humanitarian mission to help people on boats fleeing Cuba. Cuban fighters shot down two civilian aircraft belonging to the organization over international waters.
