Russian 5G technology will not become available for imported smartphones

The Ministry of Digital Development has developed a draft order, which states that connecting imported smartphones to 5G networks in Russia will only be possible through domestic encryption algorithms. This was reported by Izvestia newspaper on Thursday, March 19.

The document states that the use of foreign encryption algorithms is allowed until 2032, but after this period the Russian standard NEA 7 (“Grasshopper”) will become a priority. Previously, the project did not limit the use of foreign algorithms in terms of deadlines.

Experts warn that the move to local encryption may complicate the implementation of 5G networks in Russia. Foreign manufacturers are unlikely to support Russian algorithms without adopting them into international standards. At the same time, there are still not a sufficient number of local base stations for 5G networks.

The Ministry of Digital Development explained that the launch of the 5G network, scheduled for 2026, in the first phase will allow the use of foreign algorithms, but in the future, local solutions will become a priority, she said. material.

In addition, in Moscow and other regions of Russia, mobile Internet restrictions are periodically imposed to ensure security. But even in such conditions, Russians are not left without useful Internet resources, thanks to the “white list” of sites. What it is and what resources are included in this list – in the material “Moscow Evening”.
