“Evening Vedomosti” reports that at the beginning of March, in the same village, three streets were returned to their pre-revolutionary names – Kommunisticheskaya again became Klyuchevskaya, Sverdlova – Andreevskaya, and Udarnaya – Tulskaya. The initiative to restore old names belongs to a native of Chernoestochensk, rector of the church named after Seraphim of Sarov in Yekaterinburg, Archimandrite Hermogenes (Eremeev).
Felix Dzerzhinsky is the founder and leader of the All-Russian Extraordinary Committee (VChK), the successor to the NKVD, KGB, and FSB. Dzerzhinsky was the organizer of the Red Terror that began after the 1917 Revolution.
In April 2026, Vladimir Putin returned the name “F.E. Dzerzhinsky” to the FSB Academy. Journalist Michael Zygar in his column in Der Spiegel magazine booksIt is planned to return the monument to Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka Square in Moscow. According to his sources, a political decision has already been taken in this regard.
The monument to Dzerzhinsky, which was toppled from its pedestal on Lubyanka Square in 1991, has been in Moscow’s Museum Park for many years. In 2021, Moscow authorities used the Active Citizen app to vote on the issue of returning the Dzerzhinsky monument to Lubyanka. As an alternative, it was proposed to erect a monument to Alexander Nevsky in the center of the square. As a result, the vote was stopped by order of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who stated that “public opinion is divided almost in half” and that monuments should unite society, not divide it.
