Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vadim Pokrovsky, who was involved in the prevention and control of AIDS, has died at the age of 71.

In the late 1980s, Pokrovsky headed a research laboratory specializing in AIDS epidemiology and prevention. “He was at the forefront of the fight against HIV infection in our country, working with the first cases and outbreaks,” the obituary published by Rospotrebnadzor said.

Pokrovsky is the author of more than 700 scientific publications and books.
