Why is Meduza looking for authors in Russia? Isn’t this dangerous?
The great war has been going on for nearly four years. For nearly four years, Meduza employees have been forced to work outside Russia. We left so we could speak freely about what we think is really important – without looking at Russian censorship.
All this time, we have been publishing material written in Russia by our own freelance authors who remained inside the country. It’s not easy. Meduza authors must adhere to strict security protocols, violation of which can lead to serious consequences. Many topics are not available to us. We cannot go on any business trip. After all, we simply have too few such reporters.
But it is very important for us to see and understand Russia. We know that you urgently need texts that truthfully describe the lives of people in our great country – against the background of recent historical events.
The situation facing the Russian-language press on both sides of the border is frustrating. Of course, it seems to us that we ourselves are not doing enough. We should at least try to change this. And for this you need to work on the ground. Therefore, we are looking for authors within Russia who work for Meduza.
This is dangerous work. But we know how to reduce risks without compromising quality.

Who are we looking for?
First of all, reporters in the broadest sense of the word. If you’ve written reports or feature stories, conducted large interviews, or compiled texts with expert commentary, this job might be for you.
What if I don’t have any experience?
We give preference to those who have real journalistic experience, at least a little. If you do not have such experience, but consider yourself a unique specialist who can cope with new tasks, write to us. Maybe we’ll come up with something.
What should be in the message?
- Tell us briefly about yourself and your experience.
- Send links to three of the articles you like (if you have them).
- Submit ideas for three textures you’d like to make for Meduza (preferably complex features with comments from heroes and experts).
- If you think there is someone who could make a recommendation for you, please list that person.
- And be sure to include links to your social media accounts.
For beginners, this will be enough. If your message is of interest to us, we will contact you.
What if I worked in a censored media outlet? Or am I still working there?
We will screen all candidates. We certainly will not cooperate with those who support (or justify) the Russian invasion of Ukraine. If you haven’t done so, write to us. We are willing to delve into your circumstances if you are a really good candidate.
How will candidates be screened?
We will tell you what we can: we will definitely study your social networks and read your posts.
We will not work with people we do not trust.
How will you ensure security? You are there and we are here
It is impossible to eliminate all risks. But we know how to reduce it. Everyone who interacts with Meduza must follow our safety protocols.
Will there be business trips?
If you are ready for them – yes.
Does it matter where I live?
No, Moscow and St. Petersburg seem more convenient from a logistical point of view. However, we are of course happy to work with journalists who live in the regions.
Is this a normal job?
No, this is freelancing.
Is this a paid position?
Yes.
