OpenAI has announced that it will end support for its AI-powered Atlas browser. Some of its functionality will be available in the ChatGPT chatbot desktop app and an extension for Google Chrome.
OpenAI product team representative James Sun He explainedAtlas will be available at least until August 9, 2026. Therefore, the browser will be on the market for less than a year.
The decision to shut down Atlas comes four months after app director Fiji Simo Named Team to reduce the number of unnecessary projects. Shortly after, OpenAI shut down Sora, an AI-powered short video generator.
OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT Atlas AI Browser in a presentation on October 21, 2025. According to the developers, they wanted to rethink the way people use the Internet. Meanwhile, the company was one of the last AI tech giants to launch such a product.
In the first reviews, Western journalists noted that Atlas is still inferior to other browsers in terms of its capabilities. Including those without built-in artificial intelligence. In particular, it was noted that Atlas does not work well as a search engine: it often produces irrelevant answers and limits the number of links to primary sources.
