Russian sambo wrestlers won 59 gold medals in 2026

This year Russian sambo wrestlers won 59 gold medals in international competitions. This was announced by the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the country’s Olympic Committee, Mikhail Degtyarev, today, Friday, May 29, in his greeting to the participants in the Russian Presidential Sambo Cup.

The Russian Presidential Sambo Cup was held in Moscow for the 19th time. According to the minister, the International Sambo Federation was one of the first to grant Russian athletes the right to compete under the flag of the national team. He also pointed out the merit of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is a master of sambo and enjoys tremendous authority among all martial arts fans.

Since the beginning of this year, 85 Russian sambo wrestlers have competed in four international tournaments and won 95 medals, including 59 gold. “We congratulate them,” Degtyarev said.

According to him, since 2024, sambo has been developed in Russia as an Olympic sport. At the moment, more than 100 thousand people in 32 Russian regions are participating in it. Degtyarev emphasized that the local school has for decades raised heroes that the country is proud of TASS.

On April 12, the Russian sambo team took first place in the overall medal standings at the World Cup in Yerevan. On the second day of the competition, the Russians won 19 medals, collecting a total of 51 awards – 24 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze.
