On Thursday, May 7, the Parliament of Moldova adopted in the first reading a new draft law prohibiting the translation of documents, speeches and discussions into Russian in the country’s highest legislative body.
– By a majority of 52 deputies, the draft regulation was approved on the first reading. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosso said that for the second reading, the Legal Committee proposed merging this project with the initiative related to the status, behavior and ethics of the representative.
The new “Law on the Organization and Work of Parliament” was developed by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, headed by Grosso. The document abolishes the mandatory translation of the regulations into Russian and imposes an effective ban on any discussion of them during plenary sessions. According to the report of the relevant parliamentary committee, this initiative aims to implement the European Commission’s recommendations from the enlargement reports for the years 2023-2025. On April 28, Moldova’s President Maia Sandu allowed her country to join Romania, stating that this would allow faster accession to the European Union. Among other possible options for Moldova’s entry into ASEAN, Sandu mentioned membership without unrecognized Transnistria.
