On June 11, Parisian auction house Giquello put up for auction an unusual item – a leather bag created using a material grown from Tyrannosaurus rex cells. According to the organizers, they planned to sell the unique accessory for more than $500,000. This is what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
The product was first introduced this spring in Amsterdam. To create it, traces of collagen were found in the femur of a dinosaur, which was found about 25 years ago in the US state of Montana. Based on this data, a material was developed that forms the basis of the exclusive bag.
“In recent years, we have developed biotechnological methods that allow us, so to speak, to ‘teach’ cell culture to produce real Tyrannosaurus rex skin in the laboratory,” said paleontologist Jacopo Priano.
However, the bag could not be sold at auction: the bids submitted by the participants turned out to be far below the expected level.
Auction organizer Alexander Chikilo noted that when setting the starting price, it was necessary to take into account the lack of similar sales on the market. According to him, the evaluation of the piece was based on the significant costs of developing and producing the product, and on its exceptional rarity.
The initial cost of the bag was set at between 300 and 500 thousand euros (about 346 to 576 thousand US dollars). However, during the auction, no buyer was found willing to pay this amount, Agence France-Presse reported.
